CJ and Cameron’s Wedding
Profile: CJ and Cameron’s Wedding:

A stylish, Filipino-Scottish affair

Christy Jane (CJ) and Cameron Scott met through friends one July evening. After warm introductions they became completely immersed in conversation and both felt amazingly comfortable with one another, talking and laughing with ease as the evening wore on.

After dating a while, CJ and Cameron went out to dinner in downtown Victoria and then decided to drive to Finlayson Point to enjoy the view. As the sun was setting, to CJ’s absolute surprise, Cameron got down on one knee and proposed, offering her a stunning oval diamond tension-set in a white gold band.

They knew that they wanted a year-long engagement and decided to get married the following September, the perfect month because they both love autumn. Actually, the autumnal equinox officially commenced September 22, so their wedding on September 24 just squeaked in.

They decided on an intimate gathering of only their closest friends and family. Originally, they had planned a destination wedding in Hawaii, but when they realized that many of their loved ones wouldn’t be able to attend, they decided to celebrate in Vancouver instead.

CJ and Cameron planned a casual yet sophisticated affair, set in the peaceful and serene Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. “Mary Cheung, the operations manager at the garden, is a consummate professional,” says CJ, “and she, along with her staff, truly helped to make our day run smoothly.”

The Über Lounge at Steamworks in Gastown was a perfect reception venue for their 50 guests. It’s a very elegant and amazingly stylish lounge with high ceilings, interesting architectural elements, funky artwork, vibrant ceiling lights, an accent brick wall, rich dark wood furniture, a great huge bar and a spectacular view of the North Shore Mountains. Add the fact that Steamworks has a superb menu and wonderful staff and you’ve got one great spot to have a party!

As a bi-racial couple — CJ is Filipino and Cameron is of French and Scottish ancestry — it was a beautiful thing to see a gathering of such racially diverse people. CJ’s maid of honour, her sister, is Filipino, her bridesmaid is Chinese, their best man is East Indian, their groomsman is Vietnamese-Chinese and their ring and coin bearers are Japanese-Hungarian-Belgian. In fact, their bridal party was like the United Nations!

Along with the exchange of rings, CJ and Cameron incorporated a number of wedding traditions from their different backgrounds. They passed Unity Coins from husband to wife, a contemporary version of the traditional wedding coins known as arrhae or arras (13 gold or silver coins) in the Philippines and Spain. Each coin represents one of 13 universal tenets of an enduring marriage: love, trust, commitment, respect, joy, happiness, harmony, wisdom, wholeness, nurturing, caring, cooperation and peace. CJ’s sister explained and read the tenets during the wedding ceremony.

The highlights of the wedding day include:
* The décor at the Über Lounge was absolutely fantastic, with hundreds of pillar and votives candles everywhere to cast a soft, romantic glow.
* Lavender cymbidium orchids (CJ’s favorite flower) were placed in small liqueur glasses throughout the lounge.
* Their chocolate fountain was a huge hit, thanks to Charlies Chocolate Factory in Burnaby.
* Guests were absolutely gob smacked to receive miniature bottles of Pillitteri Estate Sparkling Vidal ice wine as wedding favors. These were presented in mini silver wine buckets that had been filled with clear acrylic pieces that looked like ice. “They were definitely a splurge but well worth it,” says CJ.

CJ meticulously created a wedding day itinerary that included a detailed timeline, things to do and who was in charge of them, as well as vendor/personal contacts and phone numbers. It really helped to have a plan.

“Give yourself plenty of time to get things done,” advises CJ, “and make lists! Although the planning process can be stressful at times, try to enjoy it and keep things in perspective. As a good friend reminded me: Remember to enjoy the journey as well as the destination.”
