A Christian wedding in the Western style

Haylee Schroeder and Matt Noel met in high school through Matt’s best friend Adam, who happened to be dating Haylee’s friend, Rachel. Haylee was in Grade 11 and Matt was in Grade 12. When they first met, Haylee thought Matt was very shy because he didn’t say much.

They dated off and on for two years; then Haylee graduated and went on to hairdressing school and Matt went to college. Although they hadn’t spoken or seen each other in two years, one February day they decided to meet for coffee.

When they got together, Haylee knew right away that Matt was the one she wanted to marry. “My heart told me so,” she says. They began talking about marriage in March and then, in June, they met for coffee at the same coffee shop where they had met in February and Jim proposed. They were engaged for 14 months while they planned a big and beautiful wedding that had a garden theme but would be held indoors.

The ceremony was held August 5 at the New Life Community Church in Abbotsford. A reception followed at the Ramada Conference Centre, which suited Haylee’s vision of a grand room with high ceilings, like a ballroom.

At the wedding, Haylee wore an ivory gown made of French tulle with crystal straps. Matt wore a black tuxedo with a cream-colored shirt, tie and vest.

Haylee wore her hair was half up and curled, with a diamond tiara. She and everyone in the wedding party had their hair styled before the wedding at the Salon Picasso, where Haylee works.

As a Christian wedding tradition, before any vows were given, the bride and groom held hands and prayed with the pastor.

The couple’s biggest worry about the wedding was making sure everything would be done in time. There was so much to do. by Haylee’s mom, aunt and a family friend made the bridesmaids’ and flower girls’ dresses. Haylee’s mom also made the multi-tiered wedding cakes and designed the largest layer so it contained a water fountain.

Haylee really wanted her parents to know how much their support met to her. “They helped with so much,” she says. “My mom never stopped helping me. She worked into the night on those dresses and my dad put up with all the wedding planning that went on.”

As gifts to their guests, the couple decided to give out candy necklaces as party favors because they were the first gift Matt and Haylee ever bought each other.

Haylee was worried about the flowers because she wanted them to be very special and they turned out to be more than she had hoped. They were amazing: calla lilies, orchids, Kermit mums and white and purple roses.

Haylee found having a book to get ideas from was very helpful and provided more ideas they could suggest to the wedding planner and decorator they hired.

The couple went on honeymoon to Sun Peaks and later to Osoyoos.

Now that they’re married, the best part is that they experience everything with their partner now. “I love being able to wake up next to Matt everyday,” says Haylee.

“You can’t go into marriage thinking you are going to change the other person,” says Haylee. “You have to love them for who they are now. I think that’s why a lot of marriages don’t work: people think their partner will change once they get married. Well, people are who they are.”
