The story of Patrick and Kathleen began about 15 years ago when they were both in high school. It’s a story about an annoying little kid and a senpai (senior) with some of the trademark plot points of a Hollywood chick flick.

Although Patrick and Kathleen attended the same high school, they were only friends. Kathleen describes Patrick as “a serious senior” while Patrick laughingly remembers Kathleen as “an annoying little kid.”

Although they lost touch after graduation, fate works in mysterious ways, and the duo gradually reconnected through the magic of the Internet.

It was the summer of 2010. Patrick wanted to see if Kathleen was still the annoying kid he remembered.
They met up in Hong Kong, and Patrick was smitten. “Kathleen has become a lovely young woman,” said Patrick. “And so, the pursuit of eternal happiness began.”

Kathleen and Patrick began a long distance relationship that lasted over a year. Then Kathleen decided to move back to Vancouver in 2011, and Patrick popped the question one year later.

“Patrick proposed during a mini trip to Portland/Seattle at the Seattle Aquarium,” explains Kathleen. “We spent two days together before he proposed during the trip. I didn't know that he had the ring in his jacket's pocket all along.”

Kathleen and Patrick decided to get married within a year. “The year of Dragon was a lucky year for marriage, so we had someone pick some auspicious dates and chose from those,” explains Patrick.

Patrick's family presented Kathleen’s family with various symbolic gifts to formally acknowledge the engagement, while Kathleen’s family sent out Happiness Cakes to friends and relatives to announce the wedding.

Smitten by its simple classic style, Kathleen and Patrick booked the Minoru Chapel for their ceremony while the reception would take place at the Vancouver Aquarium, a favourite hangout.

“We also had our new bed set up on an auspicious date. Symbolic items representing child-bearing, prosperity, and happiness were laid on top of the bed,” explains Kathleen.

According to custom, the couple separated the day before the wedding. In the night, parents and relatives blessed them during the hair combing ceremony.

On Oct 7th, Patrick arrived to take me away,” says Kathleen. “We had a tea ceremony at my house. Then we went over to his parents’ where I was officially introduced to his family during another tea ceremony.”

For both tea ceremonies, Kathleen wore the traditional red brocade Chinese dress called Cheongsams or Qipao; beautifully elegant and quietly charming.

Later for the ceremony and reception, she changed to a strapless a-line gown with a sweetheart neckline purchased from Blush Bridal. Shoes from Calvin Klein and a string of elegant pearls and pearl earrings completed Kathleen’s ensemble while Patrick opted for a 3-piece with a stylish bow tie from J.Crew.

“Both dresses were gifts from my mom as well as all my jewellery,” explains Kathleen. “I wanted to keep it simple and comfortable. In fact, I changed into flats after the wedding ceremony.

Instead of a theme, Patrick and Kathleen simply created a day made up of things they love best—like candles, antique toys, and the aquarium. “We wanted everyone to enjoy the day and feel like they were part of it instead of only a guest,” explains Kathleen.

“We put together our own seating chart and centerpieces,” says Kathleen. “Our guest book was an ocean themed print where guests signed on marine animal shaped spaces on the poster. We had to transfer items to the aquarium for the candy buffet as well as flower decorations from the chapel to the aquarium. We weren't too organized. There were to-do lists floating around everywhere, and a folder that we never used. Luckily, we hired a day coordinator who helped us with all that.”

Their wedding day coordinator was Cory from Corazon Wedding. “Hiring her was one of the best decisions that we made,” states Kathleen. “She was very accommodating and helpful. Without her help we would probably have panicked every other second on our wedding day”.

Guests received mason jars hand painted by the bride and groom to fill up at the candy bar as favours. Since it’s well known that both Patrick and Kathleen and sugar addicts, it was an appropriate touch.

Neither Patrick nor Kathleen had any particular worries about their big day. “Enjoy the process,” urges Patrick. “Because you only get to do this once. At the end of day, what matters most is the person standing right in front of you saying I do.”

“We were both very involved in planning the wedding, so we made most decisions together,” adds Kathleen.“Our best decision was to hire a day-of coordinator, so we could truly enjoy our day without having to worry about details. At the end, the wedding is only one day out of the many days you two will be spending together as husband and wife. Do not let the wedding planning ruin the relationship.”

Although Kathleen and Patrick haven’t had a chance to escape on their honeymoon, they’re enjoying their new life together. “We share the same passion for food which is very important to a foodie like me,” laughs Kathleen. “We can also do nothing together and still have a good time.”

Patrick’s advice for a successful marriage is to “Just let things flow and not try and change your partner. Listen to and communicate with your partner constantly.”

“Compromise,” adds Kathleen emphatically. “You have to adapt to your new life together!”
