On July 19, 2013, Vancouver realtor Garth Lam took his girlfriend, Leslie, on a picturesque hike to stunning Lake O’Hara, nestled in the Rocky Mountains. When they reached their destination, he set up a tripod to capture the moment, as anyone might do. ,Leslie set up a tripod as she always likes to take photos together much to Garths dislike. This time it was different to Leslie’s surprise however, when their ten year relationship was launched to the next level when Garth lowered himself onto one knee and proposed! Leslie had no inkling that Garth was even browsing for rings, so the proposal came as an even greater, and of course lovelier, shock. Exactly one year later, the two were married in the heart of downtown Vancouver in a gorgeous and memorable ceremony.

Not only did the couple want a summer wedding, but they selected the day of their nuptials based on good dates according to the Chinese calendar. Their chosen venues, the Rosewood Hotel Georgia and Sheraton Wall Centre, were favoured locations for the ceremony and reception, respectively. At the Rosewood Hotel, attendees were entertained and engaged with door games, putting a fun spin on the day’s festivities. The Groom and Groomsmen had to play door games to “get the bride” The reception was particularly special in that it featured a beautiful Chinese tea ceremony in the Sheraton’s penthouse suite, complete with a roasted pig and appetizers during the cocktail hour. The bride and groom agree that the tea ceremony was definitely one of the day’s highlights. In fact, their guests are still raving about the food at the reception.

Leslie was positively stunning in an ivory sweetheart lace dress with a detachable train, and she complimented her classy gown with Jimmy Choo shoes and Tacori earrings. The groom and his groomsmen cut fine figures in their grey tuxedos. Guests were gifted with dainty succulents and thank you notes, a unique and personalized way to show appreciation and love to everyone who shared in Leslie and Garth’s special day.

Making the occasion even more customized, the bride and groom created many of the wedding’s necessary items by hand. They made invitations, candy jars, candles, and more, meticulously incorporating lace into the items for that extra measure of gorgeousness. Although this may sound like a daunting task, the bride and groom say that taking wedding preparations one step at a time is key. Don’t get bogged down by the stress of the bigger picture. Know what you need and tackle each item one before the next. They also entrusted the sourcing of wedding suppliers to the Sheraton Wall Centre, and say that the seasoned professionals there did a fantastic job. Finally, they were able to depend on the help of family members to stay organized. Never hesitated to solicit help from those you love!

Leslie and Garth admit that appeasing everyone’s opinions became a little difficult at times, and although they took all recommendations and preferences into consideration, it was the bride and groom who made the final decisions. They remind couples that it’s important to take what you can from the advice of others without becoming too overwhelmed, because there will be countless opinions, but only so many viable options. It’s important the bridge and groom stay true to themselves, something Leslie and Garth proved with the personalized touches that truly made their wedding their own.
With the hustle and bustle of their big day over, Leslie and Garth indulged in a three week European honeymoon, a location the two were both very excited about. Truly, this honeymoon was a romantic and wonderful way to celebrate their extraordinary union.

About the Cultural Wedding Planner
"The book looked great! We read through it and it has a lot of good information that we remember discussing and going over. We escpecially liked the timeline suggestions at the back of the book as we felt a lot of the times we were either way ahead or very rushed in picking/doing some items." Leslie and Garth.
